Oil painting from Portraits, The Masai Mara
The Masai Mara
36x60 Oil on Gallery-Wrap Canvas
Private Collection

We went on safari in Kenya several years ago. It's taken until now for me to feel capable of trying to paint it. The thing that strikes one most about being out in the bush in Africa is the utter vastness of it all. This painting is from the Masai Mara, the northern extension of the Serengetti. It's vastness dwarfs even the tallest of all African wildlife, the reticulated giraffe. Here, four of them graze quietly as we watch — equally quietly — from our Range Rover. And that's the other thing that strikes one about the African bush: the utter quiet. One can actually hear the animals munch — even from a great distance. This is a very large painting, unframed, because the picture wraps the sides of the canvas.
