I was on retreat at the Trappist Abbey, Our Lady of Gethsemani, near Bardstown, Kentucky. Walking paths and narrow roads radiate in seemingly all directions from the buildings.  Here a monk, walking stick in hand, returns to the abbey on a late fall afternoon — perhaps he has just heard the vesper bell — as he walks amid rich, fall colors that play brilliantly against the more somber tones of the sheltering field of evergreens.
