I waited and waited on the boardwalk in New Jersey's Great Swamp one fall afternoon for the elderly couple ahead of me to move on so I could take a picture. Then I realized that their lingering to enjoy the feast of color was an integral and essential part of the peaceful scene laid out before me. The sun was bright and warm that day and it intensified all the colors it hit even the gray distressedwood handrails and the soft whites of the couple's hair.
