As a former longtime and loving resident of New Jersey, I can say, “Who would have thunk it?” But here it is and not surprisingly, at all: the whole palette of autumn color dressing a marshy setting in one of the state's many beautiful but largely unsung nature spots, the Great Swamp. The painting is highly impressionistic, to be sure, but at the same time highly realistic, too, because that's the way the swamp actually looks when its autumn wardrobe is lit by strong, clear afternoon sun. The mosscovered stream even cooperates with the mood by offering up a patch of clear, dark water to reflect color from above.
