I came out of the Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi after Lauds and early Mass one Sunday morning, walked across the small piazza and took a photograph of this scene looking across the valley toward the Basilica of St. Francis at the other end of the village. It was all so white and gleaming and beautiful in the bright early morning light, the grain fields shining golden in the foreground, the surrounding hills of Umbria still misty and purple in the distance.
