The gumbo limbo is a native Florida tree whose bark can range from a deep purplish–brown to almost a reddish–orange — and it's been nicknamed the “tourist tree” because its sunburn–colored “skin” often peels. The trunks of these trees are frequently quite gnarled or twisted. I thought this one — among a stand of gumbos on a winding trail in Fort Lauderdale's ocean–front Birch State Park — a particularly attractive and paintable one.
