We were on a rangerled twilight hike through the dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore's Province Lands near the tip of the Cape a couple of summers ago, as the sun began to set near Hatch's Harbor. Although a large dune blocked our view of the bay, the oranges, yellows and purples of the sky were spectacular by themselves, and reflected into a small tidal inlet behind the primary coastal dune. Within only minutes after I snapped the photograph from which I later created this painting, we were plunged into near total darkness and had to stumble our way back through the shifting, listening to the distant howls of coyotes.
