Walk a few hundred yards from the parking lot at almost any Cape Cod beach near the end of summer and you are sure to come across a beach installation, a free–form construction using abandoned buoys, driftwood, pieces of rope, rocks — even fragments of clothing or plastic bags left beyond by other beachgoers. This one had been built at the foot of the hundred-foot dunes in Truro, and the late-afternoon shadows from the towering sand behind it gave an especially dramatic look to such a humble piece of amateur construction.
