Great Island is actually a peninsula jutting south into Cape Cod Bay. Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, it's a popular spot for hiking (it's as far as four-plus miles to Jeremy Point, depending on the tide), and for picnicking and beach-going. This painting depicts a quiet, deserted beach lying far below the tall dunes on the west side of the peninsula.
