Wellfleet's Great Island, part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, is a miles-long peninsula of alternating dunes and wooded uplands. The trudge along sandy dune paths - or no paths at all! - can be exhausting on a warm summer's day, but the beauty and solitude of the landscape make the hike more than worth the effort. Aching muscles and dry, parched throats at the end of the day never diminish the lingering thrill of having hiked through this awesome landscape.
